If you are reading this blog, you probably remember back in the ‘80s when punk was popular and every co-ed wishing to annoy her parents wore combat boots and shredded jeans when she went home for Thanksgiving break.
Luckily, the boots were a low-commitment kind of rebellion, unlike the brave ones who opted for a dyed mohawk or a safety pin through the nose.
Now, with the wisdom that comes with being 60+ years old, I’ve realized the classic combat boot (also called a moto or motorcycle boot) is actually the perfect footwear choice for women of a certain age.
Why Now?
First, there’s the lug sole. Slip resistant in bad weather and broad enough to provide stability while accommodating wide feet, bunions and the like, this design fits older, achy feet that have likely taken a beating from high heels and pointy toes.
Next, the high-rise, adjustable upper of the traditional combat boot provides all-day support for ankles that might have gotten a little wonky thanks to a newfound passion for pickleball. When my own ankle issues became irritating enough for me to see a specialist, one of the recommendations was to invest in sturdy pair of lace-up boots. Sure thing! Will my HSA cover the cost of a pair of Doc Martens?
And finally, attitude. Do you want to look confident and project an image of self-assurance? A woman in combat boots is not a pushover. Her style has a bit of an edge to it, and she gets a little thrill out still feeling like one of the cool kids.
Make it your Style
Now that I (hopefully) have convinced you to step into your own moto moment, let’s dream up some ideas of how to wear them with style, confidence and FUN!
Because of their size and heft, combat boots are a statement piece, so when pulling together an outfit remember to let them be the focal point.
Pair them with cropped jeans or pants with a loose or straight-leg fit. Both styles work well, as long as the majority of the boot is visible.
And don’t forget about leggings. Pair a moto boot with black leggings and an oversize sweater and finish the look by piling on lots of chunky jewelry to create balance and proportion. This look is the definition of “art director grandma” chic.
These boots also work really well as a contrast to a long, flowy Boho dress layered with whimsical necklaces, stacks of bracelets and drop earrings.
And for the ultimate in rocker chic, choose a classic black pencil skirt or sheath dress, continue the monochromatic look with matching tights and top it off with a vintage motorcycle jacket.
Brave New Look
My wish for all of us women living vibrantly in midlife is that we continue evolving and discovering new and exciting parts of ourselves. A great pair of combat boots may be just the ticket.
